A three-day Regional Conference on Improving Border Security, organized by the OSCE Mission to the United Nations and the UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime) was opened today in Ohrid. Directors and senior officials of the Customs and Border Authorities of the Western Balkans, as well as senior representatives of the customs and police services of the Hellenic Republic are attending the Conference.

The main goal of the Regional Conference is to improve border security by strengthening the capacity of border authorities in the Western Balkans.

Customs Director General Slavica Kutirov, MSc., Deputy Director of the Public Security Bureau Arif Asani, representatives of the OSCE Mission to Skopje and the UNDOC addressed the Conference participants .

In her address, the Director General of the Customs Administration Kutirov referred to the professional cooperation and support with the OSCE Mission and the UNODC Office, through active implementation of several projects, as well as the high level of cooperation between the Customs Administrations in the region, Police and the Prosecutors Offices. She also informed about the state of play of the establishment of the special inter-agency group at the Skopje International Airport.

In the next two days, topics of discussion at the Regional Conference will be the challenges in border security, as well as future projects aimed at supporting effective and coordinated actions to detect illicit trade and strengthen the capacity of border authorities in the Western Balkans in the fight against organized crime.
