During the past two weeks, the customs officers detected an attempt for drug trafficking and several attempts for smuggling various goods, seizing electrical tools, electrical bicycles, automobile spare parts, footwear, apparel, ski equipment, cigarettes, zippers, sewing threads and couterfeits.

Marijuana and amphetamine

The customs officers at the border crossing Tabanovce Motorway prevented an attempt for trafficking of marijuana and amphetamine. On 13.02.2019, at about 23.00 h, a Macedonian registered bus traveling on a regular line Struga - Salzburg, driven by a Macedonian citizen, arrived at the border crossing point’s exit section. The customs officers selected a Macedonian citizen – passenger on the bus for detailed customs control. While they were escorting him to the examination room, they noticed that he threw two bags of unknown plant substance. During the conducted search, another bag filled with unknown plant substance was found in the passenger’s underwear, and in his jacket pocket, the customs officers found a packet of cigarettes with unknown white powder. Also, another bag of unknown white powder was found on the floor, beside his legs. The analysis of the substances by the Ministry of the Interior established that the plant is marijuana weighting 51 grams, and the powder was diazepam weighing 14 grams and amphetamine weighing 0.25 grams.

The Customs Administration brought criminal charges against the passenger who is charged with "Unauthorized production and release for sale of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and precursors".

Besides this case, the following goods were also seized:

Electric tools, electric bikes and footwear

  • 29 electric tools, 11 binoculars, 64 pairs of shoes and 2 electric bicycles, detected in two separate cases, during control of a car and a bus, declared for entrance at the border crossing point Tabanovce Motorway.

In the first case, 29 electric tools (drills and screwers), 11 binoculars and 64 pairs of footwear (sneakers and work shoes) were found in 3 bags placed in the luggage compartment of a Macedonian bus that was traveling from Dusseldorf to Debar. The undeclared goods were seized, and a misdemeanor procedure was initiated against the owner, a Macedonian citizen – bus passenger.

In the second case, in the boot of a Macedonian car, driven by a Macedonian citizen, two electric bicycles PIAGGIO WI with equipment (battery chargers, bicycle displays, code cards, keys and backpacks) were found, which were covered with boxes with products from IKEA. The bicycles, for which the driver claimed that were bought in Skopje and that they had previously taken them out from the Republic of Macedonia, but did not submit a document evidence, were seized, and an appropriate procedure will be initiated against the driver.

  • 135 pieces of used car parts (intercooler coolers, instrument boards, tire pumps, heating system fans, steering wheels, ignition modules, used tires etc.) and a used motorcycle, detected by the Mobile Customs Teams, during control of a Macedonian registered truck loaded with used automobile spare parts from a consignor from Germany, destined for a Skopje based importer, declared for import clearance at the Customs Office Skopje 1. The products, which were not covered by the customs declaration were seized, and a request for initiation of a misdemeanor procedure will be filed against the importer.

Apparel and skiing equipment

  • 440 pieces of finished textile products, 292 pieces of ski equipment, 7 bicycles and 1 air conditioner, found in two separate cases by the mobile customs teams.

In the first case, during control of a Turkish registered bus traveling from Istanbul to Gostivar, declared for entrance in the country at the border crossing point Bogorodica, 440 ready-made textile products (dresses, socks and scarves) were found in a suitcase that belonged to a Macedonian national – passenger on the bus). The undeclared goods were seized, and a request for initiation of a misdemeanor procedure will be filed against the passenger.

In the second case, during control of a Macedonian registered truck loaded with used products from a Switzerland based consignor, destined for an individual from Struga, declared for import clearance at the Customs Office Struga, the customs officers found 84 pairs of skis, 26 pairs of ski boots, 16 ski helmets, 50 ski sticks, 6 ski boards, 7 bikes and 1 inverter air-conditioning, which were not included in the customs declaration. The products were seized, and a request for initiation of a misdemeanor procedure will be filed against the importer.

Cigarettes and products for the textile industry

  • 5 boxes of cigarettes OME and Davidoff Gold, without excise stamps, 886 zippers of 17 cm and 60 cm and 900 sewing thread coils, detected during control of a Bulgarian registered car, driven by a Macedonian citizen, declared for entrance at the border crossing point Dojran. The undeclared goods were found in the boot of the vehicle, under the co-driver's seat and in a compartment under the back seat of the back seat. They were seized and an appropriate procedure will be initiated against the driver.

Goods suspected of infringing intellectual property rights

  • 20 pairs of sport shoes bearing logo of protected trademark, detected by the mobile customs teams, during control of a Turkish bus driven by a Macedonian citizen, declared for entrance at the border crossing Bogorodica. The products, found in bags placed in the trunk of the bus, were seized due to suspicion that they infringe intellectual property rights, and in accordance with the regulations, the Customs Administration will initiate a procedure for verification of their authenticity.
