ON 6TH September 2021, the Customs Administration of the Republic of North Macedonia, in cooperation with the Criminal Police Department of the Ministry of Interior carried out a raid against illegal sale of cut tobacco. The subject of the raid was control and seizure of excise products which are illegally sold and violating the Customs and other Laws in the competence of the Customs Administration. 280 kilograms of cut tobacco were found and seized on two separate locations on the territory of the City of Skopje. The excise duty evaded is estimated to nearly 500,000 denars. Criminal charges will be filed against the person, in accordance with Article 279b of the Criminal Code.

In a simultaneous independent investigation conducted at BCP Tabanovce, during detailed inspection of a freight motor vehicle, the customs inspectors from the Operational Matters Department seized 1200 packs (59,996 boxes) of Marble Filter de Luxe cigarettes, worth (per invoice) MKD 6,155,280 due to reasonable suspicion of violation of intellectual property rights.

The cigarettes and cut ​​tobacco are products, subject of excise duties and when they are in retail, they must be marked with excise control stamps. Excise duties participate with about 22% in the total taxes collected by the state, making 13% of the budget revenues, of which over 5% come from cigarettes and tobacco products. Accordingly, it is a significant source of revenue in the state budget.

The seriousness of the problem and the extent of the damage caused by illegal trade in tobacco and tobacco products require continuous efforts to prevent the illegal trade in excise goods.

This way, we not only protect the competitiveness and prevent tax evasion, but contribute to the protection of human health that may be endangered by the use of untested products illegally released on the market in an illegal manner.
