Last week, the customs officers interdicted marijuana trafficking, detected a case of fraud and several attempts for smuggling various goods, seizing foreign currency, apparel and cargo straps.

The following goods were seized:

Marijuana

At the border crossing point Deve Bair, the customs officers in cooperation with the Ministry of the Interior prevented an attempt for trafficking 88 kilograms of marijuana.

On February 27, 2018, an empty Albanian truck with a trailer, driven by an Albanian citizen, arrived at the border crossing point’s exit section. A detailed inspection of the vehicle was carried out, resulting in detection of 88 kilograms of unknown green substance packed inside 48 wooden boards of the trailer, used to secure the load. The substance was subjected to drug testing, which detected presence of marijuana. The drugs and the person were handed over to the Ministry of Interior for further processing.

Foreign currency

- 7,500 EUR, found during personal search of a Macedonian national who travelled with a Bulgarian car, declared for exit from the country at the border crossing point Tabanovce Motorway. 9,500 Euros were found on the passenger, for which he did not have a document to prove the origin. The passenger was allowed to keep 2,000 euros, an amount that a resident can freely take out from the country, and a misdemeanor procedure has been initiated..

Clothing

- 4,200 pieces of apparel (T-shirts, socks, underwear and towels) detected by a Mobile Customs Teams during control of goods originating in Turkey, destined for an importer from Strumica, declared for import customs clearance at the Customs Office Skopje 1. The undeclared products, which were not covered by the customs declaration were seized and a misdemeanor procedure will be initiated against the importer.

Cargo straps

- 110 pieces of straps for tightening cargo on trucks lorries, found during control of a Bulgarian truck, driven by a Macedonian citizen, declared for entrance at the border crossing point Novo Selo. The undeclared goods, found on the bed and in front of the passenger seat in the cab of the vehicle, as well as in the trailer's outer case, were seized. Appropriate procedure will be initiated against the driver.

Fraud

At the Customs Office Struga, an attempt for import of prohibited goods was detected. An importer from Skopje declared for import clearance 10.420 kg of unleaded gasoline, RON 95. Due to suspicion that the goods were wrongly declared, a sample was taken and sent to the customs laboratory. The results showed that it is unleaded gasoline, which should have been classified in a different tariff code, for whose  import is prohibited.

Based on the results of the analysis, the customs office prepared Report customs offense based on wrong tariff classification and returned the goods abroad.
