Last week, the customs officers foiled an attempt for customs fraud, illegal entry of migrants and several attempts for smuggling of various goods, seizing foreign currencies, kitchen knives, coffee machine parts, wallets, jewellery and counterfeits.

The following goods were seized:

In a small pouch that the driver carried on him, the customs officers found 30.000 Euros. 10,000 euros were returned to the driver, an amount that a non-resident can freely take out from from the country. For the committed foreign currency offense, a request for initiating a misdemeanor procedure will be submitted.

Some of the undeclared knives were found in the boot of the vehicle, covered with rubber cover, and part behind the front seats, covered with a sheet. A request for initiation of misdemeanor procedure was submitted against the driver.

Fraud
An attempt for import duty evasion by wrong declaration of the origin of goods was detected at the Customs Office Kavadarci.
In May 2017, a Kavadarci-based importer declared for import clearance solar controllers, inverters and photo-sensing cells with one customs declaration, where the products, classified in three items, where the solar controllers and inverters were covered with an invoice declaration, and declared as originating in the European Union, in order to obtain preferential status and customs clearance with a rate of duty of 0%.
After the physical inspection of the goods, the customs officers doubted the correct declaration of the origin of the goods, and therefore the invoice was sent for subsequent verification to the Customs Administration of the Republic of Bulgaria. According to the reply, the exporter could not provide proof of European origin of the goods, and hence the Customs Administration of the Republic of Bulgaria stated that the invoice declaration cannot be confirmed, i.e. the goods do not fulfill the conditions for obtaining preferential origin. On grounds of the response, the Customs Office Kavadarci calculated additional import duties in the amount of nearly 22 thousand Denars. A misdemeanor procedure was initiated with a mandatory penalty against the perpetrator.

Migrants
The customs officials of the border crossing point Bogorodica, together with their colleagues form the Ministry of Interior prevented an attempt for illegal entry of 13 illegal migrants.
An empty Bulgarian registered truck, driven by a Greek national, arrived for entry in the country, and was selected for detailed control because the customs officers noticed that both the tractor and the trailer were registered several days earlier. During the control, in the front of the trailer, under the truck curtain, the customs officers found vertical metal holders, which could not be seen from the inside. After removing the curtain, a specially constructed area was discovered with illegal migrants inside, all male, who did not have documents for identification.
The persons and the vehicle were handed over to the police at the border crossing point for further processing.
