The customs inspectors of the Operational Matters Department, in coordinated action with inspectors from the Ministry of Interior, prevented an attempt for drug trafficking, seizing about 2,700 grams of marijuana.

On August 22, 2017, at 10:45 am in Skopje, a Mercedes C220 CDI car with Skopje license plates was intercepted, under suspicion of drug transportation. The car and the driver - Macedonian national, were taken to the premises of the Customs Office Skopje 4, where a detailed search of the vehicle was conducted. In the boot of the vehicle, a bunker was found inside of which were two bags of unknown green plant substance with a total weight of 2,700 grams. The analysis with a drug tester showed indicators that it is a marijuana. All prepared documents, the person and the drugs were handed over to the inspectors from the Ministry of Interior for further processing.

Besides the mentioned case, over the past two weeks the customs officers foiled a case of fraud and several attempts for smuggling, seizing cash, a platform for transporting vehicles, automobile spare parts, motor oil, clothes, synthesizers, watches and counterfeits.

The following goods were seized:

Cash

- 11,800 Euros, detected by a Mobile Customs Team, during control of a Macedonian registered car, driven by a Macedonian national, declared for exit from the country at the border crossing point Blace. In the glove compartment,  in front of the co-driver's seat, an envelope with 13,800 euros was found, for which the driver did not have a document of origin. Pursuant the law, 2,000 euros were returned to the driver, an amount that a resident can freely take out from the country.

A request for initiation of misdemeanor procedure was initiated against the perpetrator for the committed foreign currency misdemeanor.

Freight platform and automobile parts

- 78 pieces of automobile spare parts (bumper,  headlamp, fog lights, hood, wings etc), 10 liters of motor oil and other products (collagen ampoules, deep fryer, shower battery and clothes), detected in cooperation with members of the Ministry interior, during control of a Bulgarian registered car, driven by a Macedonian national, declared for entrance at the border crossing pointNovo Selo. The undeclared goods, found in the boot of the vehicle, have been seized, and an appropriate procedure will be initiated against the driver.

-  1 car transport platform, detected during document control of a Macedonian freight vehicle loaded with one passenger car, driven by a Macedonian citizen, declared for entrance at the border crossing point Delchevo. Asked by the customs officers, the driver stated that he had nothing to declare for customs control and that he transported his wife’s  vehicle that had broken down in  Bulgaria. The customs officers noticed difference between the platform and the rest of the vehicle chassis, and checked the registration document, where it was noted that the vehicle is a freight wagon. After checking the electronic border police systems, it was determined that the vehicle remained in Bulgaria from 07.08.2017 until 26.08.2017, when the driver arrived at the border crossing point. The driver admitted that he had taken the vehicle to be upgraded with a vehicle transport platform for which he paid € 1,200.

This way, the driver attempted to import undeclared goods in the country, which is why a customs offense report was drafted against him.

Musical instruments and watches

- 5 synthesizers and 980 watches, detected in two separate cases by the Mobile Customs Teams.

In the first case, during the control of a Macedonian registered car driven by a Macedonian citizen on the Deve Bair-Kumanovo road, 5 synthesizers KORG Pa4X, worth about 580 thousand Denars were found in the boot of the vehicle. The musical instruments for which the passenger did not have a document of origin and paid customs duties were impounded, and the case was handed over to the Investigation Department, which filed criminal charges for suspected crime “Smuggling”.

In the second case, during the control of a Kosovo registered passenger van, driven by a Kosovo citizen at the border crossing point Deve Bair,  980 watches were found in a factory made cavity in the floor of the vehicle between the front and back seats. They were seized, and a request for initiation of a misdemeanor procedure will be filed against the driver.

Goods suspected of infringing intellectual property rights

- 17 pairs of children's tracksuits bearing logo of protected trademarks, found during the control of the luggage of a Macedonian citizen who traveled on a Kosovo bus, declared for entrance into the country at the border crossing point Jazince. The passenger reported the tracksuits for clearance, but they were detained on suspicion of being counterfeit. In accordance with the law, the Customs Administration will initiate a procedure to prove the authenticity of the products.

Fraud

An attempt for import duty evasion was detected at the Customs Office Kavadarci, by presenting false evidence of origin of goods. In the course of 2016, an importer from Kavadarci, with one customs declaration declared for import customs clearance washing, drying and ironing machines, and submitted invoices with declarations of origin for the purpose of obtaining preferential origin of the goods. Due to suspicion in the authenticity of the proofs of origin, the invoices were sent for further verification to the HM Revenue and Customs, whereby it was confirmed that the goods do not meet the conditions for acquiring preferential origin.

On the basis of the received response, additional import duties in the amount of 40 thousand Denars were calculated and a misdemeanor procedure was conducted with a mandatory fine against the importing company.
