Last two weeks, the customs officers prevented an attempt for illegal crossing of the border by migrants and prevented several attempts for smuggling various goods, including cash in foreign currencies, automobile spare parts, clothing, kitchen knives and counterfeits.

The following was seized:

Cash

- EUR 4,000 and CHF 6,000, detected in two separate cases, during personal searches of four passengers at the border crossing point Bogorodica.

In the first case, two German nationals arrived for exit at the BCP with a German registered car. When asked by the customs officers if they had anything to declare, they stated that they were carrying around EUR 3,500, but during personal search, the customs officers found EUR 14,000 in a handbag of the co-driver, for which he did not have a document of origin or confirmation of declared cash upon entry in the country. Pursuant the regulations, EUR 10,000 were returned to the passenger, an amount that a non-resident can freely take out from the country, while EUR 4,000 were temporarily detained. 

In the second case, two Macedonian nationals arrived at the BCP, entrance section with a Macedonian registered car. The two passengers aid they had nothing to declare, but during a personal search the customs officers found CHF 18.100 and EUR 10,000 in several envelopes and a wallet inside a backpack. According to the regulations, 10,000 euros were returned to the passengers, as an amount that could be freely brought into the country, while CHF 6,000 temporarily detained.

In both cases, requests for misdemeanor proceedings were filed against the perpetrators.

Kitchen knives

- 106 kitchen knives worth about MKD 470,000, detected at Skopje International Airport, during an X-ray control of a Turkish citizen's suitcase, who arrived from Istanbul. The undeclared knives were impounded and misdemeanor proceedings will be initiated against the passenger.

Automobile spare parts

- 15 pieces of spare parts for passenger vehicles and motorcycles (forks, stabilizers and rubber parts for Alfa Romeo and YASUNI and POLINI motorcycle exhaust systems), found during control of a Bulgarian registered car, driven by a Macedonian national at the border crossing point Tabanovce, entrance section. The undeclared products, found in cardboard boxes placed in the boot of the vehicle and covered with suitcases, were seized and appropriate action will be taken against the driver.

- 8 used aluminum alloy wheels, found during control of a Macedonian registered truck driven by a Macedonian citizen at the border crossing point Novo Selo, entrance section. The undeclared products found in the pallet area of the truck were seized and appropriate action will be taken against the driver.

- 1 vehicle turbine tester and 1 Actuator Tester programmable cable, detected at the Skopje International Airport, during control of a Macedonian citizen's suitcase who arrived from London. The passenger initially claimed that the device had been purchased in Macedonia and did not know that he had to declare it when he was leaving the country, but the customs officers found an invoice and bill amounting to GBP 2,700 during the inspection of his personal backpack. The undeclared products were seized and misdemeanor proceedings will be initiated against the passenger.

Clothing

- 57 pieces of women's clothing (jackets, coats, blouses and sweaters), detected during control of a Macedonian registered car with four Macedonian citizens who arrived at the border crossing point Bogorodica, entrance section. The undeclared products, found in 7 bags, placed in a roof luggage compartment and behind the middle seats, were seized and appropriate action will be taken against the driver, who claimed to be the owner of the goods.

- 54 pairs of tracksuits, found during control of a Macedonian bus at the border crossing point Blace, entrance section. The undeclared goods, found in the toilet of the bus, were seized and misdemeanor proceedings were initiated against the co-driver, who claimed to be the owner of the goods.

Goods suspected of infringing intellectual property rights

- 60 plush toys bearing logo of protected trademarks, detected by the Mobile Customs Teams, during control of different goods originating in China, destined for an importer from Kochani, declared for import customs clearance at the Customs Office Gevgelija. Due to suspicions that the goods violate intellectual property rights, the toys have been temporarily seized and a procedure to establish their authenticity will be initiated in accordance with the law.

Migrants

The mobile customs teams, in two separate cases, found 47 illegal migrants.

In the first case, a Macedonian registered truck, driven by a Macedonian national was stopped at the motorway Veles-Skopje, in which 45 illegal migrants without identification documents were found inside the trailer.

In the second case, also on the motorway Veles - Skopje, two illegal migrants were seen walking on their way to Veles. The migrants did not have identification documents, but they said they were Pakistani.

In both cases the migrants were handed over to the Ministry of Interior for further proceedings.
